Girnar Parikrama draws thousands in Rajkot City.

Junagadh City, one of the most important Historical Places in Gujarat, draws the attention of thousands of travellers from across the state during Shivratri Mela, Girnar parikrama and Girnar climbing competition. Like every year, this year too, a large number of people across the state have come to the city for performing the 36-km ‘Lili Parikrama’ (spiritual walk) around the Girnar Parvat .

The parikrama, as usual, began on Thursday night, the day of Tulsi Vivah, also known as Dev Diwali, from the foot of the mountain, where the pilgrims spent the night. On Friday morning, the parikrama was started from Dudheshwar Mahadev temple.

They would spend the night at the Saint Jinabava’s hut(Jinabava ni Madhi). The next day they would reach Malvela, the place surrounded by high climbers located in the midst of Girnar forest.

The next morning, they leave for southern forest and reach to Bordevi, temple of Goddess Ambika. On Tuesday morning, the pilgrims would return to Bhavnath Mandir Taleti at the foot of the mountain.

Authorities like Junagadh Municipal Corporation, health department, state transport, forest, water supply, police, in addition to social and religious organizations, are on the job of helping about one million pilgrims expected this year.

The event also attracts a large number of youngsters cutting across religious lines and regions. According to a popular belief, the Pandavas, after winning the war at Kurukshetra, did the ‘parikrama’ to seek God’s blessings.

Though the event began on Thursday, about 68,000 piece-loving people had already completed their journey to avoid heavy traffic, sources said.

The festival of Mahashivratri (literally means the ‘Grand Night dedicated for the worship of Lord Shiva’). is looked upon with greatest reverence & respect by the devotees of Lord Shiva. This festival is celebrated every year on the 13/14^th day in the Krishna Paksha (waning moon fortnight, just before the new moon) of the month of Phalgun. As per the English calendar this is somewhere around Feb or March.

This day and more so the night is dedicated by the devotees of Lord Shiva for his worship, practice of various austerities & meditation. All the Shiva Temples are fully decorated and there are hordes of devotees queuing up to get darshan of Lord & offer their obeisance’s at the feet of Lord Shiva on this special day.

The Significance of Mahashivratri :

There are several stories which are associated with this special grand night of Lord Shiva:

1. Samudra Manthan Story:

During Samudra Manthan by the gods and demons, a highly toxic poison came out of the ocean. As per the advice of Lord Vishnu, gods approached Lord Shiva and prayed him to protect life by consuming this poison. Pleased with their prayers, out of compassion for living beings, Lord Shiva drank this poison and held it in his throat by binding it with a snake. The throat became blue due to the poison (Thus Lord Shiva is also know as Neelakantha) and Shiva remained unharmed. The wise men advised gods to keep Lord Shiva awake during the night. To keep him awake, the gods took turn performing various dances and playing music. A vigil was thus kept by the gods in contemplation of Shiva. As the day broke out, Shiva, pleased with their devotion blessed them all, and also said that whosoever worshipped & contemplated on him on this day shall be blessed with the fulfillment of his or her wishes. Since then, on this day and night – devotees fast, keep vigil, sing glories of Lord and meditate.

2. Manifestation of Lord Shiv as a Jyotirlinga on this day:

On this day manifested the great & also the first ever effulgent (Jyotirmaya) form (Anala-skanda or a pillar of fire) of Lord Shiva in front of Lord Vishnu & Brahmaji.

The story goes that once both Vishnuji & Brahmaji, got infected by ego. The result was an clash between both these gods. In order to show their respective superiority they decided to fight it out. Lord Shiva decided to intervene so as to make them realise that there is something more to life than the powers of an embodied beings. He manifested in the form of a huge pillar of fire (Anala-skanda) whose beginning and end could not be seen. Vishnuji & Brahmaji decided to check what this strange thing was. While Vishnuji, in the form of varaha (boar) went down towards patal-loka to see the end of this pillar, Brahmaji sitting on his swan went up. Even after years of travel they could not see the beginning or the end of this manifestation. Brahmaji saw a leaf falling off, and thought it fell down from the top of pillar of fire, and returned satisfied that he had seen the starting point. They came back, while Lord Vishnu accepted that he could not see the end, Brahmaji said that he had seen, which was a lie. Lord Shiva cursed Brahmaji that no will ever worship him. Then he too surrendered. This manifestation of Lord Shiva in the form of the first effulgent linga was on this special day of Mahashivratri, and thus all devotees pray to the effulgent linga (jyotirlinga) of Lord Shiva.

3. Day of Reunion of Shiva & Parvati:

King Daksha, opposed Sati’s marriage with Shiva. At a yagna (holy sacrifice) the king ignored Shiva’s presence and thereby insulted the latter publicly. Sati was so angered by this that she jumped into the sacrificial fire and ended her life. Lord Shiva unleashed his fury at the death of his wife by performing the violent dance, Tandava. He wiped out Daksha’s kingdom, undertook rigorous penance and retired to the Himalayas. The Gods, who feared that the severity of Shiva’s penance might bring an end to the world, revived Sati in the new avatar of Parvati. Shiva-Parvati married and this reunion is celebrated on Maha Shivaratri.

4. Story of Chitrabhanu:

In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma, whilst resting on the bed of arrows and discoursing on Dharma, refers to the observance of Maha Shivaratri by King Chitrabhanu. The story goes as follows.

Once upon a time King Chitrabhanu of the Ikshvaku dynasty, who ruled over the whole of Jambudvipa, was observing a fast with his wife, it being the day of Mahashivratri. The sage Ashtavakra came on a visit to the court of the king.

The sage asked, “O king! why are you observing a fast today?”

King Chitrabhanu explained why. He had the gift of remembering the incidents of his previous birth.

The king said to the sage: “In my past birth I was a hunter in Varanasi. My name was Suswara. My livelihood was to kill and sell birds and animals. One day I was roaming the forests in search of animals. I was overtaken by the darkness of night. Unable to return home, I climbed a tree for shelter. It happened to be a bel tree. I had shot a deer that day but I had no time to take it home. I bundled it up and tied it to a branch on the tree. As I was tormented by hunger and thirst, I kept awake throughout the night. I shed profuse tears when I thought of my poor wife and children who were starving and anxiously awaiting my return. To pass away the time that night I engaged myself in plucking the bel leaves and dropping them down onto the ground.

“The day dawned. I returned home and sold the deer. I bought some food for myself and for my family. I was about to break my fast when a stranger came to me, begging for food. I served him first and then took my food.

“At the time of death, I saw two messengers of Lord Shiva. They were sent down to conduct my soul to the abode of Lord Shiva. I learnt then for the first time of the great merit I had earned by the unconscious worship of Lord Shiva during the night of Shivratri. They told me that there was a Lingam at the bottom of the tree. The leaves I dropped fell on the Lingam. My tears which I had shed out of pure sorrow for my family fell onto the Lingam and washed it. And I had fasted all day and all night. Thus did I unconsciously worship the Lord.

“I lived in the abode of the Lord and enjoyed divine bliss for long ages. I am now reborn as Chitrabhanu.” I have now realized about the infinite love & compassion of Lord Shiva. Even unconscious acts of goodness are blessed in such a way, then what to talk of our conscious acts of expressing our love, respect and reverence for Lord Shiva. He is indeed Ashutosh, one who gets pleased very soon. Lord Shiva is indeed an embodiment of infinite love, love & compassion, that is why he is so easy to please. He showers us with his blessings at every moment of our lives, may we all devote this day of Mahashivratri to express our gratitude unto his feet. It is a very auspicious day.

5. Story of Lubdhak:

Another legend. There once lived a tribal named Lubdhak, who was a devotee of Shiva. It was his usual practice to go into the forest to collect firewood. One day he wandered deeper than usual and night fell before he could come out. It was the night before the no moon night and the thin crescent moon offered no light. He was not able to find his way in the dark and soon got lost. A hungry tiger smelt him out and with a loud roar made his intentions clear. Lubdhak knew he could not outrun the tiger and so he climbed up a bel tree. In order to keep awake so that he would not fall down in his sleep he began to pluck the leaves from the bel tree and drop them one by one, each time chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”, which means I bow down to Shiva. In this manner, he passed the night. Until dawn, he had dropped a thousand bel leaves. When he descended the tree in the morning, he saw a lingam, which he had missed in the dark. Unknowingly he had been dropping leaves on the lingam. This was the 14th night of the waxing moon of the month of Phalgun and came to be celebrated at Mahashivratri.

6. Spiritual Significance:

Maha is the Big One, Shiv means auspiciousness, and Ratri means night; this is a day when we awake to the most auspicious truth within ourself. Night stands for darkness i.e. ignorance, in which all beings sleep & then dream. Our present transmigratory existence and limited individuality is nothing but a big dream. Freedom is never by some unique or scintillating experiences in this dreamy realm of existence, but only by waking up to that which is not a product of mind. That which is not a product of mind is the Self, the Atma. Mandukya Upanishad calls that non-relative truth of Self as Shiva. That is referred to as the fourth state of the Self, the Turiya. It is the most auspicious one, knowing which one truly wakes up and gets ‘as though’ liberated. One who knows the Atma as Brahman alone is a liberated one.

The other three states apart from the Turiya are the waking, dream and the deep sleep states – when we turn extrovert and try to get experiences from the things around, revel in our imaginary worlds, or just switch off and rest, respectively. The fact that the special sadhana of this day has been kept for night implies that we need to simulate deep sleep, i.e. no flights of mind as in waking or dream states. Turn away from all experiences, physical or mental and just become quiet. No responsibilities, no desires, no burden to achieve anything, no roles to play, no regrets, no aspirations – just as in deep sleep but all consciously. When all relative roles and their corresponding thoughts are kept aside and the mind is quiet, then that which remains is that which is not a product of our minds – the Shiv tattva, the turiya, the auspicious one. Let us awake to that and realize it to be our real Self, thereafter, let this free and awakened mind respond to any situation around, there will be just the fragrance of auspiciousness in everything. That will be the real celebration of Mahashivrati.

How to Celebrate?

The devotees of Lord Shiva should preferably do the following things on this day.

1. Observe fast on this day, taking only fruits & milk.

2. Perform elaborate puja of Lord Shiva, and perform Rudrabhisheka. Chant various hymns & bhajan of Lord Shiva.

3. Use this day to bring to your mind the infinite ways your life has been blessed. In our obsession with thinking on what all I dont have we fail to see the infinite ways in which we are so positively blessed. The fact that you can read right now is a great blessing, ask someone who cannot see. Feel truly blessed & gratified and express your thanks & devotion at the feet of Lord by chanting the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ as many times as you can.

4.  Practice Dhyana for longer periods than the usual routine. Be one with your loving God, and revel in utter fulfillment.

5. Remain more introvert on this day contemplating about the truths of life.

6. Go for darshan of Lord Shiva where he is properly & regularly worshipped.

7. Try to get darshan & satsang of some learned Mahatmas. Offer sewa at Ashrams & Temples.

Maha Shivratri, the night of the worship of Shiva, occurs on the 14th night of the new moon during the dark half of the month of Phalguna (Feb / March) when Hindus offer special prayer to the lord of destruction.

Here’re three reasons to celebrate Shivratri:

1. The absolute formless God, Sadashiv appeared in the form of “Lingodbhav Moorti” exactly at midnight on Maha Shivratri. That is why all Shiva devotees keep vigil during the night of Shivratri and do “Shivlingam abhishekham” (coronation of the phallic idol) at midnight.

Did You Know?

God in his manifestation as Vishnu made his appearance as Krishna at Gokul at midnight, 180 days after Shivratri, commonly known as Janmashtami. Thus, the circle of one year is divided into two by these two auspicious days of the Hindu Calendar.

2. Lord Shiva was married to Devi Parvati on Shivratri. Remember Shiva minus Parvati is pure ‘Nirgun Brahman’. With his illusive power, (Maya, Parvati) He becomes the “Sagun Brahman” for the purpose of the pious devotion of his devotees.

3. It is also believed that on Shivratri, Lord Shiva became ‘Neelkantham’ or the blue-throated by swallowing the deadly poison that came up during the churning of “Kshir Sagar” or the milky ocean. The poison was so deadly that even a drop in His stomach, which represents the universe, would have annihilated the entire world. Hence, He held it in His neck, which turned blue due to the effect of poison. Shivratri is therefore also a day of thanksgiving to the Lord for protecting us from annihilation.

The 14th shloka of Shivmahimna Stotra says: “O three eyed Lord, when the poison came up through the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons, they were all aghast with fear as if the untimely end of all creation was imminent. In your kindness, you drank all the poison that still makes your throat blue. O Lord, even this blue mark does but increase your glory. What is apparently a blemish becomes an ornament in one intent on ridding the world of fear.”

Shivratri or Maha Shivaratri is one of the major Hindu festivals celebrated with gaiety. Shivratri 2011 or Maha Shivaratri 2011 date is March 3rd, Thursday. It is observed on Falgun Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi as per North Indian calendars and Magha Krishna Chaturdashi as per Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh calendars. Devotees observe upvas (fasting) and Jagran on Shivratri to get blessings of Lord Shiva.

In the Puranas many myths, stories and legends explain the origin and significance of the festival Maha Shivaratri. As per one, during the period of churning the ocean (sagar manthan) by the gods and the demons, a pot of poison (Kaal koot) emerged from the ocean. This sudden incident terrified the dev ganas and asura ganas as the poison was capable of creating mahapralaya (deluge), which can destroy the entire universe.

To save themselves and the universe they went to Lord Shiva for help. For the worlds safer existence and the survival of living beings, Shiva drank the ‘Kaal koot visha (terrible poison). But, instead of swallowing he kept it in his throat. Keeping the deadly poison in his throat made Shivas throat turn blue. Because of this great miracle Shiva is also called Neelakanta, the one who has blue throat. To commemorate the event of Shiva protecting the world with his miraculous act,

કાગવડમાં ઈતિહાસ રચાયો : ૭ લાખ લેઉવા પટેલો ઊમટી પડ્યા: એંસી કરોડના દાનની ઘોષણા
૨૧મી જાન્યુઆરીના રોજ કાગવડ અને ખોડલધામની શિલાન્યાસની તમામ તૈયારીઓ અંતિમ ચરણમાં ચાલી રહી છે. ૧૦ દિવસથી પ્રસાદી માટેનું રસોડું કાર્યરત કરાયું છે. જેમાં અંદાજે ૧૨ લાખથી વધુ લાડું બનાવવામાં આવ્યા છે. તે ઉપરાંત ગાંઠિયા, કંકુ અને માતાજીનો ફોટો અને પાણીના પાઉચ એક બેગમાં પેક કરીને આપવામાં આવશે.

આ મહોત્સવને સફળ બનાવવા માટે તબીબો બાદ એડવોકેટોની મિટિંગ યોજાઇ ગઇ હતી, પ્રવાહ – પ્રસાર સમિતિઓ દ્વારા તમામ લોકોને રૂબરૂમાં આમંત્રણ પાઠવી દેવામાં આવ્યું છે. જ્યારે આજે સરદાર પટેલ કર્મચારી મંડળની મહાજલાભિષેક કાર રેલી યોજવામાં આવી હતી. જ્યારે ગોંડલ તાલુકાના ૭૫ ગામોમાં અનેરો ઉત્સાહ છવાયો છે. પાંચ લાખ લોકો આવવાના હોવાથી ટ્રાફિક વ્યવસ્થા સિકયુરિટી સહિતની તમામ વ્યવસ્થાને આખરી ઓપ આપવામાં આવી રહ્યો છે. આ મહોત્સવને સફળ બનાવવા પ્રમુખ નરેશભાઇ પટેલ, પરેશ ગજેરા, શૈલેષ અકબરી સહિતના તમામ સભ્યો ખભ્ભે ખભ્ભા મીલાવી તન, મન, ધનથી કામે લાગી ગયા છે.

બે કરોડનો ખર્ચ સૌજન્યથી થશે –

૨૧મી તારીખે ભવ્યાતભિવ્ય શિલાન્યાસ યોજાવાનો છે. તેમાં લાઇટિંગ, મંડપ, ડોમ, ડામર રોડ, પ્રસાદ સહિતની તમામ વ્યવસ્થા માટે ૨ કરોડથી વધુ રૂપિયાનો ખર્ચ થવાનો છે. પરંતુ લેઉવા સમાજના લોકોએ તમામ વસ્તુએ પોતાના માથે લઇ લેતા આ સમગ્ર કાર્યક્રમ સૌજન્યથી યોજાશે.

૨૦૦થી વધુ એનઆરઆઇ આવશે -

લેઉવા પટેલ સમાજના લોકો વિશ્વભરમાં ફેલાયેલા છે. એટલે આ કાર્યક્રમમાં ઇંગ્લેન્ડથી ૧૫૦ લોકો અને યુએસએથી ૫૦ થી વધુ લોકો આ કાર્યક્રમમાં ભાગ લેવા આવવાના છે.

નરેશ પટેલની સમાજને અપીલ –

ખોડલધામ ટ્રસ્ટના પ્રમુખ નરેશ પટેલે પોતાના સમાજને અપીલ કરતા જણાવ્યું હતું કે પાંચ લાખ લોકો એકઠા થવાના છે તો પોતે જ શાંતિથી આવી સ્વયંમતા રાખે. કોઇને અગવડતા ના પડે તેવું જાતે જ કરે તેવી અપીલ કરી છે.

મા ખોડલને જે ધરશે, લક્ષ્મી તેનું ઘર ભરશે -

કાર્યક્રમ સ્થળ ઉપર માં ખોડલની હૂંડી રાખવામાં આવે છે. જેમાં મંદિર બનાવવા માટે દાનપેટી જેવું રાખવામાં આવ્યું છે. જેમાં ત્યાં આવનાર લોકો સોનું ચાંદી રૂપિયા મામને અર્પણ કરી શકશે.

લેઉવા પટેલ સમાજના સંકુલનો તા. ૨૧મીએ શિલાન્યાસ.

અનેક ધાર્મિક્સ્થળો, સંતોની જગ્યાઓને લીધે જાણીતા સૌરાષ્ટ્રમાં હવે ધાર્મિક અને સામાજિક ઉત્કર્ષ તથા ઉત્થાનના શિખર અને સીમાસ્તંભ સમાન ખોડલધામ નામનું એક વિરાટ સંકુલ રચાવા જઇ રહ્યું છે. ખોડલધામ સંકુલનો શિલાન્યાસ તા. ૨૧ જાન્યુઆરી, શુક્રવારે થશે. વીરપુર-કાગવડ પાસે આ વિરાટ કાર્ય હાથ ધરાશે.

ફક્ત મંદિર નહીં, જીવનના હેતુની ઇમારત –

ટ્રસ્ટીઓએ જણાવ્યું કે ખોડલધામના નિર્માણનો હેતુ ભક્તિ દ્વારા શક્તિનું સર્જન કરવાનો છે. આ સંકુલ ફક્ત એક મંદિર ન બની રહેતાં લેઉવા પટેલ સમાજની આકાંક્ષાઓ અનુસાર જીવંત હેતુ પાર પાડનારું કેન્દ્ર બની રહેશે.

શું પ્રવૃત્તિઓ થશે?

૨૧મી જાન્યુઆરીના રોજ કાગવડ ખાતે ખોડલધામની શિલાન્યાસ વિધિ પ્રસંગને ભવ્યાતભિવ્ય સફળ બનાવવા અનેક આયોજન થઇ ચૂકયા છે. આ ખોડલધામ હવે ઈતિહાસ રચવા માટે આગળ વધી રહ્યું છે. જેમાં ખોડિયારનો ખોડલ રથ સમગ્ર શહેર અને તાલુકા મથકોએ ફરી રહ્યો છે. જે વિસ્તારમાં રથ નીકળ્યો છે ત્યાં લેઉવા પટેલો જ નહીં પરંતુ અન્ય જ્ઞાતિના લોકો પણ ઉમટીને જોડાઇ રહ્યા છે.

I’m running Windows Server 2008/R2 with SharePoint 2010 Enterprise. I have installed the ArcGIS Geolist Web Part and ArcGIS Map Web Part on the main portal. Going to a site and selecting edit page I see the “Add a Web Part” links in the zones on the page. I click on the link and selecting either ArcGIS web part places it in the page. After doing this the page editing controls become inactive (grayed out). The Edit button loses its icon altogether. Clicking on the “Add a Web Part” in any zone results in absolutely nothing happening. After adding the first web part, at the bottom left of IE I get a warning “Done, but with errors on page.” I just go up to the pull down arrow of the ArcGIS web part and select Delete. Once the web part is deleted the pages editing controls on the ribbon become active again. I can add other web parts, as many as I want without any problem. This only occurs when I add in either ArcGIS web part. Any help to resolve this problem would be appreciated.

Ahmedabad, Monday : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi released the state’s brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan’s three short Ad films on ‘Kutch’, ‘Gir Lion Sanctuary’ and ‘Somnath’ under the title of ‘Khushbu Gujarat Ki’ in presence of the mega star here this evening.

After viewing the films at a special screening, Mr. Modi profusely congratulated Amitabh Bachchan and his team for projecting the state’s rich heritage and majestic places of tourist interest before the world in a befitting manner through what he described as ‘excellent’ Ad films.

Srisailam is located in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. This whole area is full of forests of Kadali, Bilva trees, mountain ranges and Patalaganga (Krishnaveni river). All of them echo from these joyous voices of devotees.

Puranic History of Srisailam

When Kumar Kartikeya returned to Kailash after completing his trip around the earth, he heard about Ganesha�s marriage from Narada. This angered him. In spite of being restrained by his parents, he touched their feet in obeisance and left for Krounch Mountain. Parvati was very distraught at having to be away from her son, implored Lord Shiva to look for their son. Together, they went to Kumara. But, Kumara went away a further three Yojanas, after learning about his parents coming after him to Krouncha Mountain. Before embarking on a further search for their son on each mountain, they decided to leave a light on every mountain they visited. From that day, that place came to be known as JyotirLinga Mallikarjuna. It is believed that Shiva and Parvati visit
this palce on Amavasya (No moon day) and (full Moon day) Pournami, respectively.

Visiting this JyotirLinag not only blesses one with
innumerable wealth, but also name and fame and fulfils all the desires.

Once, a princess named Chandravati decided to go to the Jungles to do penance and meditation. She chose Kadali Vana for this purpose. One day, she witnessed a miracle. A Kapila cow was standing under a Bilwa tree and milk was flowing from all of its four udders, sinking into the ground. The cow kept doing this as a routine chore everyday.
Chandravati dug up that area and was dumb founded at what she saw. There was a self-raising Swyambhu SivaLinga. It was bright and shining like the sun rays, and looked like it was burning, throwing flames in all directions. Chandravati prayed to Siva in this JyotirLinga. She built a huge Shiva Temple there. Lord Shankara was very pleased with
her. Chandravati went to Kailash wind borne. She received salvation and Mukti. On one of the stone-inscriptions of the temple, Chandravati story can be seen carved out.

Location and Development of mallikarjuna swamy temple

Shaila Mallikarjuna�s holy place is located on the banks of River Krishna. Here River Krishna is in the form of Patalaganga (underground spring). Lakhs of devotees take a holy dip here and then go for the Darshan of the JyotirLinga.

During the Karnataka Movement, Chatrapati Shivaji used to come to take a Darshan
of the JyotirLinga during the Maharatri. He built a tower on the right side of the Temple and also opened a free-meal center.

Nature And Beauty

The kings of the VijayaNagar Dynasty too built a Temple, Tower, Portico and a pond. Ahelyadevi Holkar, a great devotee of Siva built a strong bathing wharf consisting of 852 steps on the banks of the Patalganga. Earlier, this part of the Shaila mountains was an unreachable tough terrain and fraught with danger. Even then, devotees, with their sheer will power, used to reach there in large numbers. Hiranyakashipa, Narada, Pandavas, Sri Ram are some of the great mythological personalities who have
visited this  holy shrine. shankara bhagavatpAda, rENukAchArya(1), akka mahAdevi, hemareddy mallamma are some of the great devotees who worshipped Lord mallikArjuna here.

It connects Surat with Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Indore, Jaipur, Jabalpur, Satna, Patna, Bhopal and other cities of North India. There is also a connection to the Central Railway zone through Udhana Railway Junction and the Tapti line which connects Surat with cities of central India namely Jalgaon, Amravati and Nagpur. Passenger trains range from local trains that stop at all stations on the way to express trains like the August Kranti Rajdhani Express and the Mumbai Rajdhani Express. In addition, there are freight trains that move the goods produced by the city to the rest of the country and beyond, and bring supplies into the city. Surat Railway Station which was built by the British is one of its kind in India, as the railway platform is on the first floor of the railway station and the train reaches the platform through an inclined ramp.

Sea

Surat has its own port which is used for shipping freight. A plan to connect Surat with Mumbai, Goa, Dubai, Bhavnagar through ferry services is moving forward. The Surat-Bhavnagar ferry service is much awaited by the citizens. This would help Surat connect with the Saurashtra region of Gujarat state reducing commuting time by at least 6 hours.

Road

Due to heavy traffic congestion on major highways passing through Surat city New expressways are planned and will be completed by 2013. Surat has excellent roads according to Business Today Magazine. Surat Municipal Corporation tries to improve road infrastructure of the city. The major highways passing through Surat are the Udhana-Mumbai Highway also known as Udhana-Navsari Highway, Surat-Ahmedabad Highway also kown as Varachha Main Road, Surat-Kolkata Highway also known as Dhulia Highway. Due to rapid urbanization and to get rid of fatal accidents Surat Municipal Corporation and Surat Urban Development Authority has planned to develop an Outer Ring Road and Middle Ring Road which are under construction to decongest the traffic from the major Highways passing through city. The city has recently seen the completion of a large number of road projects, particularly elevated roads, flyovers, in the diamond and textile zones of the city. This has significantly cut down the commuting time for many people traveling to the diamond and textile districts. One of the very few “Multi-Layer Flyovers” in India is now in Surat over Majura Gate. The Eastern expressway also known as Varachha Flyway of Surat is one of India’s longest flyover under city municipal limits in the four lane category.

The Golden Quadrilateral highway system passes through Surat. The city is connected to the National Highway 8 through a 16 km connector highway. National highway 6, also known as Surat – Kolkata Highway, starts from Hazira and passes through surat city and connects the city to Dhule, Amravati, Nagpur, Raipur, Sambalpur, Kharagpur and Kolkata. The National Highway 228, also known as Dandi Heritage highway, starts from Sabarmati in Ahmedabad and passes through Anand, Kheda, Ankleshwar and passes through Surat city to Navsari and ends up in Dandi. National Highway 50 also known as Surat-Pune(Poona) Highway starts near a Junction known as Kharvarnagar Junction and passes through Sachin,Gujarat, Navsari, Gandevi, Dharampur, Nasik and Pune.

Local transport

On 22nd August 2008, the SMSS bus service was opened by the city Mayor Dr. Kanubhai Mavani. It is considered the best city bus services in India. These buses are CNG-fueled and have an LCD screen in the front giving details about the journey. The conductor uses an electronic machine to print out the tickets. The bus stops are modern and comfortable. The bus service in general is relatively hi-tech and modern. Bus rapid transit system is planned for the city and the project is expected to be completed by 2010.
